A little unknown gem in San Diego is a place called Cinema Under the Stars and if you’ve got a bit of an old soul like me and enjoy a classic 1950’s film every now and then, this is where it’s at. Also, if you know me, you know I love a cute drive in flick, however, my time out here in San Diego I haven’t heard any hype on drive ins so I took it upon myself to do some deep searching and found out about Cinema Under the Stars.
It’s an outdoor theater, with a retractable dome for the winters but initially you are under the stars during the summer time. Unfortunately, my friend and I attended during what was still the winter season so we didn’t get to be “under the stars” but it was still very cute and comfortable! They have heaters and blankets at your convenience. Everything at the concession stand is two dollars! And plenty of discounts at nearby bars and restaurants by using the proof of your ticket.
They offer single recliners in the first two rows and couples seats in the third row and then cafe table couples seats towards the back. I definitely recommend the back couples seats if you’re on a hot date, the speakers can be quite loud in the front and if you’re a talker like me after a couple then that’s the best place in the house!
They always show a cartoon in the beginning to give an extra ten minute window for guests to trickle in at the last minute (hence the bugs bunny in the painting). They don’t always show old movies either, they show modern day films also. They usually have winter time modern films and summer time old films but occasionally they will have special premieres like “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” during the winter season.
The decor is so impressive for a completely family owned business. It might be a little on the pricey side but you definitely get what you pay for, a clean facility, cheap snacks, comfortable seating, a great film in the outdoors. What’s not to love?
